Resources for freelance writers

When I left my full-time job in 2009, all I knew about freelancing was what I read in Michelle Goodman’s My So-Called Freelance Life. I still refer to that book five years later, but I’ve discovered quite a few other freelance-friendly resources along the way.

Here are some of my favorites:

  • Freelance Success — This membership service provides weekly articles on publications who need (and pay!) freelance writers. But the message boards, where you can dish with other professional writers, are arguably the best part of Freelance Success.
  • Mediabistro — Here you’ll get your dose of media news, along with “How to Pitch” guides to dozens of newsstand publications.
  • Writers Market — This subscription service is mostly geared toward authors, but it also includes freelance resources, such as a pay rate chart.
