Apps for a minimalist office

Ever since I wrote this Q&A for SmartPlanet in 2010, I’ve tried to adopt a “minimalist” lifestyle. For the most part, I’m pleased with my attempt at minimalism. I’ve got a streamlined wardrobe, my basement and attic are largely clutter free, and my bookshelves are no longer overflowing.

“Minimizing” my office and work-related accoutrements has been a bit more difficult. From stacks of well-worn writing books to piles of business expense receipts, the paper clutter alone can get quickly out of hand. My office also tends to be the last stop for orphaned electronics, household bills, personal receipts, and other odds and ends.

I’ve turned to my smartphone to help get some of the office clutter under control. Here are a few of my favorite apps for streamlining my freelance writing business:

  • OneReceipt lets me track all of my business spending — without saving dozens of paper receipts.
  • TurboScan acts as my primary scanner. It’s so good that I’m questioning the need for a printer/scanner.
  • DropVox sends your audio recordings straight to your Dropbox. Who needs a tape recorder?
  • Kindle for iPhone lets me purchase and read digital copies of new books.

What are your favorite business apps?
