Below are four key writing tips I try to keep in mind with every piece I publish:

• Watch word choice — Make sure every word you use is just right. This Mark Twain quote sums up this idea perfectly: “The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.”
• Write with authority — You’ve done the research and interviewing, so be confident in the piece you’ve produced. Choose simple, declarative sentences.
• Don’t be passive — Keep each sentence in your piece, but especially the lead, active. Try to avoid passive voice whenever possible.
• Remember rhythm — Devices like the one-sentence paragraph can give your writing impact. But don’t overuse them.
